– I agree with that, based on my experience a 55-200mm telephoto lens + 68mm of tubes set at F 7 to 9 plus and a flash gun with a diffuser produces good result. For my 50 mm macro lens with a flash set to F 11 to 16 also produces good result. I don’t have to go down at F-45.
my lenses dont disconnect, can i still use an extension tube?
On my nikon micro 105mm i can get great sharpness and suficient dof when close to 1.1scale at F22.
Higher then that i dont whant to.
Flash helps alot with shutter speeds and fill the shadows at day time.
If the ligh is to bright and u want to use the flash and the speed comes over 1125 – 1200 i usualy use ND filters to bring some stops of light down.
michael can u please tell me why is my photo all black when i put extension tubes(not kenko) on my nikon 105mm macro lens
not enough light! You need a LONG shutter speed or bump up your ISO or shoot outside on a sunny day
well i did all that but nothing happens
im looking into getting into photography i have been inlove with photography ever since i was a kid, i been watching a fe of your videos and i have decided to get the canon 7d, i would mainly be a wild life photographer, animals, insects, birds, and maybe a little landscape, what would you recomend to have or to learn before getting into such a complex enviorment, and would you recomend the canon 7d. thank you i would appreciate your reply
Hi, I googled biennger camera classes Billings, MT and your previous class showed up. So I am emailing to inquire about if you might have another class coming up or if you are up for some private hire/tutoring!??!I’m desperate! I think I love photography, but as soon as I try and take a photo I get incredibly discouraged and walk away pouting. I don’t want to be the girl that forever uses her fancy DSLR camera in auto mode. I’d love any help! Thanks so much. Happy Holidays!-Sarah Barkie
Today’s DSLRs are not expensive anymore. You can get a decent used DSLR for about $200-$300 nowadays and purchase extension tubes and a 50mm lens. All that would cost you less than $500.
hi michael total newbie question…i have a Nikon d60 and have a simga 70-300m F4-5.6 DG macro lens, is it possible to take close up photos with this set up? when i say close up subjects like small insects or rain drops on a leaf. if so can you give me a few pointers. thanks
Its because ur in camera metering is not adjusting to your low light situation. If you have a camera with TTL metering system, it will adjust automatically and u wont notice any difference. One thing you can do is increase your exposure compensation 2-3 notch up. and as michael said, use a good light source :). increasing ISO is not a good idea as u might end up with high noise
This is a guaranteed chance that dust will get into the DSLR lens but flipping the lens around works too :D, I think they sell these types of extension tubes.
Thank you for such simple, basic, easy to understand info. I am BRAND NEW to this and this clip helps me to focus ( no pun intended). What is ISO?
When is the good time for us to utilize the f/2.8 for macro photography? Any sample of macro photos taken at f/2.8?
Hi,
It’s about the fifth time that I shoot macro with a flash on high power pretty close to the lens, and HALF of the frame is black. There is more then enough light, why is this happening?
You are shooting faster than your max sync speed, typically 1/200. Try shooting at 1/160 and see what happens.
Thank you Michael for the tips. An answer, how is it the right way to use the extension tubes? Could you explain with minors details? Thank you so much. Huges from Brazil
Well, if the max sync speed with the flash is 160th of a second it’s slightly a problem, don’t you think?
Not only that the animal or bug might move and I might move so the image will be motion blurred, but also when I’m shooting protraits I can’t raise it up.
Isn’t there another soloution?
Thanks!
Its the max sync speed of the Camera, not the flash (its a mechanical thing), and typically limited to 1/200, or 1/250 & yes it is a problem. The speed of the flash however is very, very quick. You might want to check out my Speedlite Crash Course DVD because it explains everything. One workaround is to use High Speed Sync, but this will have to be on the camera, or triggered as a slave. Thanks
close up filters are terrible. Extension tubes are so much better because they not degrade image quality. Stacking is only useful when you have a still subject. Not so easy trying to do it for bug shots.

Decorated and undecorated wraehts are also available. Your patronage would be greatly appreciated.
Yeah, that’s true. I’ve always had sharp photos, though.
Verry usefull video,
You can shoot at 1/40 with a flash. Its the flash that freezes the motion.
Hi. I have a Nikon Coolpix S2600. I am not that impressed by its macro mode. I had my Sony DSC W50 and its Macro was was very good! The Nikon’s auto foucs doesn’t work properly and does not shoot good macro photos as compared to my Sony. Does this seem to be a mechanical fault or user fault? Tips please. Thankyou. 🙂

What about the Raynox DCR 150 macro converter lens?
